Can I use this over my tank background?

Hi,
I have blue tank backing taped to the outside of my tank. Can I put the vortechs on over the backing or do I need to take it off or cut a hole where the vortechs will go? I have 2 older version vortechs that are second hand. Stupid question probably but I can not find and answer anywhere.

It is possible it will work over the backing but I have not tried it.
My personal recommendation is cut a hole in the backing as the rubber dry gasket, betwen the motor and glass, will adhere much better to the glass than to a backing material.

I use my two vortech's over my plastic background. I got it from a pet store it is black on one side and blue on the other.
