My 5inch female peacock has been doing fine in a 72 gallon with a lion, panther grouper, and a humu humu trigger. However it has only been a few days so it may be too soon to tell.
that is the exact piping i have with a female chiragra, this was a big mistake as it is a perfect home that dosnt need building! she never, ever ventures out, not even for food!
I used a 2.5inch pvc t connector like the one is the image below. I found it works great for my mantis because its a great starter home, however it requires lots of personalization. My mantis only spends about 20-30% of her time in the tank, she is always exploring and finding new stuff to add to her home.
I put a bunch of pictures of my tank in my thread about the possibility of keeping mantis and fish together HERE:
My P.ciliata absolutely cannot live with a fish that's her size or smaller. I had a school of baby Aholehole / Flagtails that all died off one by one; most were pretty small, but there were a few that got decently large, to the point where I thought my mantis wouldn't be a problem for them, but that wasn't to be.
She's eaten a blue damsel and a few goby's that I've picked up from the beach. Those tend to be smart and dart away but she's so incredibly good at both hunting down fish at lighting speed, chasing them through the tank (as she did with the flagtails) or moving so slow that the goby's just do not notice her approach until it's too late.
I agree with others, though, it really, really depends on what species your mantis is and his or her disposition with regards to sharing Sometimes you have really good cohabitation going on and others, well, you'll end up with quite a few less fish than you started with (or possibly one less mantis). YMMV.
mine has a scooter blenny and lawnmower blenny as room mates and they seem to get along pretty well, i've seen the scooter and my mantis within 1" of eachother. the only thing i've actually seen my mantis hunt and attack has been ghost shrimp
