im having a problem with all of my small bottom fish/ wrasees dieing in the same spot in my tank. after examineing the tank i found there is a pistol shrimp living in the hole all of these fish are going into and never returning from. i no pistol shimp can kill inverts but can the kill fish. this is a prity big shrimp id say at least 2/2.5 inchs. he was with a goby who had to be taken out because he was to aggrissive

You sure you don't have a mantis shrimp?
I have a tiger pistol about an inch and 3/4 long, sharing a tank with 3 pep shrimp, 3 very small gobies, etc, with no problems.

Problems can be specific to a species...two of the wrong behaviors together.

But be sure what you have a pistol and not a mantis.

I don't think it can kill fish, but mine definitely snaps at them if they come near it's burrow. To be honest, the powder brown tang still eats at the small clumps of algae despite repeatedly being snapped at.

its DEFENTLY a pistol. i know when we bought it i was very carefull to look it over and make sure it was a pistol. i can also tell because i see it attack the peperment shrimp with the jet rather then lunging and attacking

I had a pistol in my tank, and every fish that slept in the rock where he resided, DIED! Mine was only a little over an inch and blue. I will say that I also had a clear one that lived in my porite rock (with x-mas tree worms) and he never caused any problems other than clicking all the time. Good luck, IMO I think that there can be good, and bad.

I don't know if this applies to all species of pistol shrimp as this is nowhere near my specialty, however the video linked below leads me to believe the pistol shrimp is carnivorous.

"The shrimp snaps a specialized claw shut to create a cavitation wave that generates acoustic pressures of up to 80 kPa at a distance of 4 cm from the claw. The pressure wave is strong enough to kill small fish."
