Can some one tell me what the rust colered stuff is ?

Cynobacteria. Keep up with water changes and siphoning as much as you can out (a turkey baster can help with this as well).
Other than that you really need to figure out what the source is.
Overfeeding? Anything die in the tank recently? ...or has anything gone "missing"? Is the tank new? How long have you been running? ...adding more flow can help prevent waste from building up and giving the bacteria something to feed on as well. ...something is feeding it and causing it to show up. Treatments will get you some relief, but it will keep coming back till you find the source.

its not cyano....looks like the start of macro's.....maybe change to different brand MH and a lower k....i get lots of red/brown algae using 14k's......check your iron levels....

HOw do you check Iron levels I have the same thing, but my tank is about two months old and going through a cycle.

My first opinion is cyano, but it could posibly be some dinoflagellates. Im sticking with cyano... tring to kill it wont work, you have to get to the source.

I have had something similar for a long time. It is all over the back of my glass as well. Mine is more like corraline as it requires scraping w a razor to get it off. Mine will eventually turn yellow and it looks like yours has some yellow in it too.

Sorry to piggy back but I have similiar stuff on my sand and it also grows on the walls dialy but my tank is only 2 months old, could this be part of a cycle?

yznhmr - have you recently added anything to your tank?
(good amount of LR or something?)

I do not have anything on my sand, only the LR and back wall as I do not scrape that wall. I have had this stuff for about 5 mos and finally just gave up on it.
my phosphates and nitrates test 0 w salifert. Nothing else has changed other than my PE has diminished during the day, but good at night.
