It was only 10 bucks so I thought I would take it home and try and see if I can get it growing again.

"Chalice" is just a common name for many different corals like Echinophyllia, Echinopora, Oxypora,etc..... What you have is a type of Echinophyllia. It might be aspera. It is hard to tell. Looks like that guy has seen better days. Some actually like more light. What do you have on your tank? A lot of people will say to give it less light but if the corals is used to more light it will starve. Are you running halides? If so what wattage and what sized tank?

im sorry but it looks kinda like its dead from all that algae...
I've seen corals come back from a looking a lot worse than that.

Its actually been doing very well. I run VHOS 440watts. Its closer to the bottom of the tank and in moderate flow. Theres no algae on the skeleton... I know it doesnt look thats good, its really not that bad it can definitly come back, thats why I bought it so I can try and save it and get it growing again.

I had half of one of my chalices get burned by and acan echinata. The half that burned looked like a bunch of gray flesh sloughing off. I almost cut that half off and tossed it. I ended up leaving it alone on the off chance it would grow over the skeleton. Lo and behold three weeks later the whole half is covered with flesh and gaining color back. What I thought was skeleton and chunks of dead flesh was actually still completely covered with flesh that healed up given good water params and some decent flow over the area. So long story...but that chalice looks really good and I bet it grows back solid and healthy for you.

Echinophyllias are pretty resistant to damage IME. Ive pretty much tortured my E. aspera (Euphyllia attacks, Aptasia, Anemonia attacks, hair algae) and the tissue has grown back over the skeleton every time. Should be OK- though they usually do grow fairly slowly
