Can someone tell me what this is?

I picked up a pipe organ frag awhile back and this was on it. Wasn't too bad, but now its just getting out of hand. Its growing everywhere. Growing in to my zoas, takin' over the pipe organ, growin' up the glass. I think I have some cheato (sp?) starting to get out of hand that came with some green star polyps. Here's some pics. They are small, I tried to post bigger but it would'nt let me.

It's pretty cool lookin', but it's like a weed. Can I trim it and throw it away or should I just remove all of it?

Thanks,
Steve

I'm not sure what type of macro this is, but I have had some in my tank before. Your best bet is to remove it because mine eventually got out of hand so bad that I had to remove the rock it was on and just let it set out of the water for 2 weeks to kill it. Unfortunately, it looks like you have corals on the same rock so you may need to get out the tooth brush and start scrubbing away.

Yea, I just tried to take some out, but it dont pull off too easy. I'll have to work on it another day. Anything that eats the stuff?

Steve

Looks like caulerpa taxifolia. Kind of a pain to get rid of sometimes I think. Some of it got into the water off of California and they are having a hard time getting rid of it.

the only thing its on that i really care about is the zoas in the last picture. So tomorrow I plan on pulling that rock from the tank and get some tweezers and start pullin the junk out. I'll probably just toss the pipe organ. It has some aips and tulip anemones on it anyways. Not unless anyone else wants the problem...

Steve

Well, looking at it again it might not be taxifolia. Are the "leaves" more featherlike or is it just the edges are serrated looking?

steve, if the organ is still alive and it comes down to just tossing it ill give it a shot. id nuke em with joes juice carefully and just enjoy the piece if it were me :) good luck with whatever you decide to do!<~~~steve

well, I'm not gonna toss it, I'm just talkin' out of frustration. I went ahead and pulled alot of the algae out. Actually went pretty good. I think I got it all off of the zoa rock. Im sure if there's one little piece it will come back. I got it off pretty much everything I could see except for the pipe organ. I pulled alot off of it though and now you can actually see the pipe organ. The algae is on the skeleton part, not the flesh (is that right terms?). So, I might see about cutting the skeleton part off, if that can be done. I just need to not let it go so long. There still some on one rock I have to work on tomorrow. I made a sand storm in the tank and of course my clowns was attacking me the whole time  I knew about this stuff for months now and didnt think anything about it. Once a week or so, I'll just pull what I can out. The hard parts done....I hope.

Steve

Oh, and the pipe organ is still alive, that first pic was actually taken a few hours ago. Here's a pic of it now after I pulled some of that algae off. I need to get some tweezers so I can get a better grip on the stuff. I was just using my fingers.

Hmmm, I wrote a responce earlier but must have hit (back) instead of submit  Anyways could it be razor caulerpa? Not much will eat it if so...

I don't know what it is, but I think I will be able to control it now. Like I said, it doesn't grow that fast because it has been in the tank for months now. Thanks for the replys and help y'all. I appreciate it.

I agree and think that is definitely razor. Gflat knows all about that stuff :P

Well, the frag did come from Gflat. It isnt a big deal though. Just weeding out what I did last night and today made my tank look a whole lot better. The pipe organ looks better now too, not being smothered by the algae.

Do you have any of this stuff left? I actually think I might like to have some for my mantis/nano tank. :P I'm about to put a bunch of tonga in there for her and think some razor might actually look cool since nothing but macro and gsp seem to do good in there.

I can get you some... I can't get rid of the stuff. I replaced all the rock in my tanks, scrubbed my coral bases. If there is a tiny piece of root left or a fragment of a blade lands, it sticks and grows (it keeps growing back from coral bases that had nothing visible after scurbbing). The scribbled rabbit ate it, but it like zoas and acans, too (most people don't have that problem, though). Urchin will eat it, too, but they sometimes like zoas and whatever else is between its mouth and the rock.
