Can this Acan recover?

Hey guys,

I'm looking at picking up this Acan colony ... but am unsure as to whether or not its doomed already.

I love the color ... I've never seen anything like it before, and the price is right.

Would you buy it:

The answer is yes! With the right care and proper levels it will definitely recover. I've nursed some terrible looking corals back to life, and I have a tiny piece of an Acan that came from a damaged colony that is doing spectacular glued to a frag plug. It's TINY! About 1/8" x 1/8", but growing. The one you have pictured has next to no tissue damage, just needs some TLC.

PS... I would love a frag of that! The colors are beautiful! :)

Looks like something might be living in that hole in the center of the acan...might want to check it out and see what's in there. It seems something killed the polyps around that area.

Of course, you can always cut around that area and you might even have a few frags to send to some of us :)

+1 and, buy it:thumbsup:

It's nice you should search for "Rescue Corals" in this site there's another member that enjoys nursing near death corals he has before and after pics. He could probs give you some great advice.

I think it will recover , keep it under low light and medium flow and feed at night when the acan open to feed, feed about twice a week with mysis and cyclops

Sorry to continue to tag along but, BUY IT! Though I guess I'm like the 5th in line for a frag... Reguardless, throw me on the list! :) :)

Agree with the others, I would dose a bit of coral snow which has always helped me to avoid infections spreading. I also recommend you leave it for a while in a quarentine tank where you can target feed frequently to boost its humor.

Hey, I'm the one who started the Rescue Corals thread. (Thanks for the plug saltbubbles!)

Totally concur with the posts above. It's a beautiful, healthy piece other than one little bit in the center. It does look like something could be living in the center and irritating the acan from growing back. It may just be something as benign as a gall crab or more devestating like a eunicid worm. Either way, keep an eye on that area.

Also, it has some nasty red algae growing on the bottom end of the pic (maybe Gelidiopsis?) If it is what I think it is, it's a pain to remove and gets rather unsightly...and not much if anything eats it. I'd remove it ASAP.

My pleasure, you are truly an inspiration. Hopefully, some day I can be as knowlegeable as you and rescue some corals of my own; in the meantime I can feel rewarded knowing that I've kept my tank up with zero losses and stable params for a month:dance: Anyway, keep up the good work.
