Can This Maze Brain Be Saved? Pics Inside.

Hi Everyone. Any suggestions are welcome. My LFS gave me this for free. It isn't doing well, but still has a little color left, so I am thinking it may be salvageable. Could be a really kewl piece if it makes it. I would love any suggestions. An ID with the scientific name would be awesome as well!

My tank specs:

125 Tall, 2X400W 10K MH, 280 VHO, ASM Skimmer, Feed 2 X Daily, Flow provided by maxijets, Water tests great, calcium around 430. Use B Ioinic part A & B.

Right now I have placed the brain in a low flow area at the bottom of the tank in the sandbed. I am target feeding it a mix of cyclopeeze, mysis and pellets. I have not seen it eat anything and haven't seen sweeper tentacles. Just got it yesterday. Here are the pics:

It looks to be a Platygyra sp. If the tissue looks ragged or you see it loose any more tissue I would put it in a separate container with tank water and a small amount, 2-5%, of hydorgen peroxide for around 5 minutes. Only do this dip if the coral is loosing tissue. The dip is hard on the coral but very destructive to any infecting bacteria or protozoans.

Otherwise I would put it in a place where it gets medium flow and medium light. With your 400W halides I would make sure that this coral gets indirect light for now. Because of the damage that your Platygyra took it may be starved for nutrition and so I would recommend feeding an Amino Acid supplement such as Reef Plus. The coral can obsorb these Amino Acids where as it might be unable to capture food, Cyclopeeze right now. I hope that this helps.

Best Wishes,

I have one that did the same thing. I tried all I could to stop the tissue recession and was not able to for a while. I made a strong Lugol's dip for it and placed it in a high flow area ( I have a nano, so I placed it on the rock right in front of the return of my hang on) to remove the bad tissue. I read somewhere on here about needing to get the bad tissue removed in order to stop it from spreading to the healthy tissue. I think while the high flow is not ideal long term, it appreared to be what stopped the recession in my case.

Mine started doing this as well, I think it was getting to much light. Make sure it is in a shaded area.
