Can This Work For A Sump?

I'm currently in the market to convert my 55 gallon freshwater tank to a FOWLR before going to a reef. In the meantime I'm doing research on different things of the hobby. My next line of questions is regarding a sump. Please let me know if this is possible.

I don't have any holes in the tank so everything would have to be up and over the top.

Can I simply make a "u" out of 1" pvc inside my tank to bring water to my sump? Would the return pump pull the water out of the tank this way or would it simply run the sump dry? I'm guessing the only way to make it work would be to suck the water at the sump end of the intake to get a siphon going. I'm thinking as long as the sump end of the intake is under water in the sump then I can stick some airline tubing up into the intake line and suck the air out. Sound like a plan?

In the sump itself I'd like a fuge area and probably throw in some LR rubble. I'd also like to get my protein skimmer and heater in there.

The sump itself is probably going to be a 20 gallon tank with all the PVC being 1" I guess. What would be a good protein skimmer to get for that area and what return pump would I need to equal the intake? From the floor of my stand to the top rim of the aquarium is about 51". For what it's worth, I will be installing ball valves or similar on each line to make water changes and such easier

Here's a quick little diagram too. lol

no it will not work. its still basically a regular siphon. just go with the pvc over flow. its easy to make and works

i ordered all my equipment with the acception of the sumpitself and the skimmer from lifereef.com. his equipment has not failed in his 26 years of operation. look him up. my stuff is quiet and was a no brainer to set up.
