can u turn a remora into a nw?

Anyone know if it's possible to cut the intake tube off the remora and replace it with normal pvc and attach a nw pump to it? I have a remora that I replaced with an Octo HOB, but I plan on doing a 10g nano later on, I just thought I'd put the thing to use but want to quiet it down and make it more efficient. Just wanted to see if anyone has tried this or thinks it will work? I know you'd have to cut the plate on the inside out to get the plumbing into the water...

I'd be trying to eliminate the spray injection noise more than anything so I'd have to extend the pipe further down the reaction chamber to get it below the water surface

It should work fine with a needlewheel/mesh mod pump on it. Just remove the spray injector and extend your intake tube down close to the bottom of th skimmer. Don't know how well it will work, but it should work fine.

I'd imagine I'd be turning it into a black BakPak in essence (but nw instead of venturi). So I'd guess it'd work at least marginally.. especially if it's on a 10g. I'll say this, couldn't be any worse than the remora stock!

I've heard of this happening and the mj meshmodded was to much for the remora. If you have a pro it may be an ok NW skimmer. Just expensive to chop it up unless u got it cheap.

it wasnt cheap but it's going to sit in the closet otherwise because I'm not going to get the same amount of $ out of it that I paid for it. It's just a regular remora. I'm sure I could find a smaller pump and put a nw in it that would match the output of the remora so it wouldn't overflow or anything.

throw on that new cpr accela pump its a needlewheel pump for 20 dollars

im long overdue on taking some pics of my remora mod...i'll take my camera to work today. i never really worked out the best pump for the remora pro model i have, i know a sedra 2500 would be perfect for a regular remora, but it's a little small for the remora pro, it's about the same performance as before the mod with that pump...unacceptable!!....
but then i put on a king 595 nw (similar to gen x 2400, sedra 3500) on there and it was way too much, massive amount of bubbles coming out of the return. so im looking for something with power in between the 2.
i'll play around with it, theres a bunch of pumps at work..
but reguadless, i'll take pics of the important part of the mod to the skimmer body/injector.

and to answer your question, i would try putting the enkamat(like 2/3 layers) underneath the water level right beneath the injector, but good luck getting it there and fastening it. i think if you did it between the injector and the plate it will just make it splatter and decrease the performance. unless mabye you seroiusly overdrive the injector... good idea though, definately merrits trying it out.

nothing yet, still gotta get either some mesh or a needlewheel impeller or a pump that has one or the other already done. But I'm going to be setting up that 10g here this week I think so I'll probably have to do something w/ it soon.

I checked out the Accela pump, but there's no reference to the impeller being a 'needle wheel' or anything special ... just that it has a venturi intake.

The thing is that even the MJs have an optional venturi intake ... it's kinda lousy, but it works. One could just drill a hole in the intake and stick a hose in there to do the same thing.

There's all kinds of MJ sizes that range from super tiny to larger, I just don't have any specific links.

Anyways, I was just wondering about the Accela pump.

Thanks for the info RSE,
I hope to see some pics of how you buctchered your remora, do you have a picture of what the insides look like?

I didn't take any pictures, but I can draw it up I guess. I have an email into someone at aquacave.com and when they get their shipment of octopus needlewheel pumps in this week he's going to check to see if it comes w/ the venturi intake. If they do, I'm going to buy one of those 225's and use that on the remora mod. Here's a scetch up of before and after:

I removed the one angled baffle, bored out the injector plate and inserted pvc down and w/ an elbow to try and eliminate bubbles going into the return chamber.

The octopus needlewheel pumps that I have do not come with a venturi so you will have to make one or find one someplace else.

You can make a sedra, genx, many of them's venturi just by taking a piece of your pvc that fit's in the pvc male adapter and then take a piece of pvc, put a metal hose clamp on it, boil it and screw, you'll get the same evact venturi for a buk or two instead of having to spend 15bux on a venturi. here's a pic before anything was drilled. Just copy the venturi you want and get inside measurements and what not. The work the same. Still not that great ; ) Just thought i'd share.

That is interesting. I got a OTP2000 with needlewheel in October and it did not come with a venturi. That is great if they are now coming with venturis.
