Can you ID this crab???

I placed an order with getyourpods.com and it arrived today. They sent me 2 tag along crabs. Crabs make me nervous I don't trust them. It took me a long time to warm up to the idea of an emerald crab, I hawk the crap out of him, I hunt him down daily just to make sure he's behaving. He does. But the crabs I got today with the pods went right into a small qt tank I have. Just looking for an idea of what to do with them and are they safe to give to someone who has a FOWLR tank. They are tiny one about the size of a quarter and the other a dime. Thanks Meghann

Hi!

I'm working on identifying them, but I wanted to ask: are they fresh water or salt? Were they hitchhikers on something (live rock, live sand, etc) or just sent to you by themselves? I'd recommend also emailing your images to the getyourpods.com people, who may see them all the time!

Do let me know what you decide to do with them. I love crabs!

^ I understand your new here which is perfectly fine :) Welcome to RC

This is reef central, freshwater usually is never a subject around here and I haven't heard of a true freshwater crab before. Fiddler and red claw crabs are actually brackish and will die in a couple months with only freshwater. Usually stores like petsmart will say they are freshwater and live a month max when they really can live 10 years under brackish water.

It kinda looks like a xanthid sp. but I don't know for sure. Usually xanthids=the sump.

Calappidae - it's not hairy nor has a large pointy pincers. None of the picture in the link you provided resembles the crab the poster submitted. Highly doubtful it's xanthid species.

Looks like it might be a juvie sally lightfoot crab(?)

Good call, I'm still learning exact id for crabs ;)

Sally light foots are flat and their leg span is usually triple their main body length. I'm stumped.

I'm stumped as well. I know SLF are flat but it's a long shot. I even checked out the site where she got her pods and couldn't find a positive ID on their crab stock. Best bet is to contact the vendor and ask what they were.

Does it have a grey or a kinda greenish shell? both are very common crab in the IRL(indian river lagoon) I have a bajillion of them... mine have not picked at my Zooas and are great clean up crew
