Hey Guys,
i need yoru help in choosing a good Digital camera. I was wondering how manny mega pixels would i need for a descent camera? not looking to break the bank just something that will give me good shots.

What's your budget? Don't get stuck in the megapixel game, it's quality and not quantity :) Just about any DSLR would provide plenty of MP to print off an 8x10 or larger. I have the Canon 30D and love it and shot with a Rebel XT for a year before it.

Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax, there are many good cameras out there, of course the first two are the most mentioned and seem to draw the most brand loyalty. That being said, go to a camera store line up the various models and brands that fall within your price range and hold and shoot with each. I would purchase the one that felt most comfortable in my hands. If you are undecided between two you can always check out the reviews and forums at dpreview.com.

Unless you are planning on making posters, as Blazer88 stated don't get stuck on megapixels. I think most DSLR's start around 6 MP,(which is more than enough to get great photo's), and go up from there.

Yup - any camera in that range is capable of producing excellent images. In order of importance:

photographer's skill, quality of the lens, camera body

Another consideration is that with a SLR you're buying a system not just a camera. The brand will determine just how many accessories and lens options that you have. Canon has the largest market share, followed by Nikon. Both of those two brands will give you lots of options.

My budget would be aroudn $800 and i was looking at a Nikon or Cannon since they seem to be the top to brands when it come to quality. My dad is a photographer, but he hates didgital so he is no help when it comes to digital stuff.

What brand dos your dad use? Even if he's a film shooter it's possible that he's got lenses that you could use.

This one isn't so bad either. Well it's good to have as a second body anyways. If you're out in the field and something goes wrong with your Mamiya this will at least get a few of those shots.

I just did a shoot in Yosemite with a guy who had the 22mp version of that (H3D-22). We were all giving him a bad time because he showed up for a 4 day shoot with that camera, 4 different lenses and a single 1gb CF card (i.e. about 35 images worth). He was borrowing cards from everyone......35K on camera gear and you can't afford another memory card?
