Can you rely on an aggressive maroon to protect its nem?

This is more of an academic question than a practical one at this point, since my lights are all in storage in another state; however I've been thinking about what to do once I get my big lights on a big tank. I like the look of some non-reef safe fish with reef stuff, a copper banded butterfly for instance would look great, but would probably eat a BTA, can a maroon hosting in a BTA protect it? Would a maroon know not to go too far out against a bigger fish, if I had say a grouper patrolling the tank too, would it be able to rely on the nem for protection?
As I said, this is academic at this point.
Thanks!

My 5" female Maroon attacked a Blueface much bigger than her and a Regal when they got to close. Maroons are very aggressive.
