Can You Use an Amonnia Remover with Prazipro?

Thanks! I'm going to do a tank transfer prazipro regime for new acquisitions. After my hospital tank failure due to ammonia, I dont want to take any chances.

MrTusk, i see mixed answers to this question quite a bit. any idea why some people assume you can't combine the two? my only experience in combining the two resulted in dead chromis, but i can't guarantee the deaths weren't due to something else (overstocking QT, etc... e.g. i had a reason to dose AmQuel, wasn't just preventative).

Check your PP bottle, it should have the Hikari tech support number. Give them a call, they're a good source that I've used often.

FWIW: I don't understand why more of us don't use a mfg's tech support help when it comes to situations like this. I don't think the safety or effects of any "iffy" product/ combination of products can be judged by the results of a couple of folks. Too many variables and info that is just "passed along". If a company doesn't have good tech support, I don't buy their stuff.

Commenting on my own post; it doesn't sound like I meant it too----common with me. I didn't mean to imply that individual experiences aren't important; they form the sum total of much of our hobby's knowledge. I just meant that when looking for something that has a definite and proven answer, like the reaction of mixing two meds (or whatever), the mfg is often the best source. This doesn't mean to call Coralife and ask who has the best skimmer.

Good point. I've just hesitant to take the manufacturers advice at times because they don't seem to always know for sure themselves or are too quick to recommend a product of their own. For instance, hikari and seachem both market products for ich that are not hobbyist approved treatments, e.g. ich-x and paraguard. Even threads on the seachem's own forum indicate they don't know for sure.

Ive found qt, ht, and meds to be a very confusing area.

IME, it's like anything else. Get the right person on the phone, and it can be an enlightening experience. But get the wrong person, and that's 10 minutes of your life you can never get back...

Can amquel plus be used with prazipro? I used half a dose of amquel plus in a 55 gal qt around a 10 days ago. I thought I had a nitrite issue but I think it was a bad test so probably did not need it.

I just added some prazipro and now wondering if I should have used carbon or something to pull the amquel out or not first.

thanks

Amquel added 10 days ago is no longer an issue so no carbon needed. As far as "a nitrite issue", Amquel is not for nitrites, it's for ammonia. Also nitrites are not harmful to saltwater fish until you get into ridiculously high numbers.

As the title asks, can you use an amonnia remover with prazipro? Specifically, AmGuard or AmQuel?

Some people have reported problems with combining the two. It seems to be more of an issue with certain fish. For example there is an active thread where a wrasse was having a hard time breathing. Come to find out Prazi and prime had been added on the same day. Once he took the fish out of it it was fine. Conversely I'm treating two clowns in a QT with both and they are fine.

Thanks. The amquel plus bottle notes it reduces ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites. I think this is different than regular amquel. After positng here, I have read some posts that stated amquel is ok with prazipro but not amquel plus.

Since I was unsure, I decided to put some carbon in and also changed 15 gallons of water. I figured better be safe than sorry. I will just run the carbon for 72 hours and then remove and start a prazipro treatment.

Fish is still alive this morning.

OK, so I just got off the phone with Hikari USA. I asked them: Can I safely use an ammonia reducer, such as Prime or Amquel, with Prazipro? The woman I spoke to told me no, but that I could use Prazipro in conjunction with their water conditioner: Aquarium Solutions Ultimate.

Now, common sense tells me she is probably allowed to only recommend mixing Hikari products... and mentioning another brand will get you an automatic "no" answer. Unless there is something chemically different about "Ultimate" that makes it safe to use in the presence of Prazipro.
