Candy can dying, or splitting?

Not sure, but either this 2 headed candy cane is splitting into three heads each, or it's shriveling up and dying. Which is it? Thanks!

Counting the mouths will always tell you when hey are splitting. For yours you can clearly see the shape of 3 heads forming so these are almost done but as they grow you can look for new mouths and you will know when it is about to split again.
