Candy Shop

I have kept zoas and mushrooms. I am thinking about getting my first LPS, a candy cane. The candy would be in a 10 gallon with 55w of 50/50 PC, would this provide enough light? I know that its neccesary to monitor and dose calcium with keeping stony corals. But, hypothetically, could my 3 gallon weekly water change supply enough calcium?

Thanks

I think everything would be fine. The light is ok and as far as calcium goes they would be the only coral using it in the tank so I don't think it would be much of an issue. I would recommend placing the candy cane high up in the tank to take advantage of as much light as possible. Good luck

My son has kept both frogspawn/hammer and candy cane in his 20gal lit with 55W PC. They did very well.

I'll second that. frogspawn/hammers/torch corals are pretty hardy coral. A good beginner lps. They do well under most conditions. Moderate flow, moderate light. I think a candy cane would be a close to equal to frogspawn.

Its no problem. Frogspawn can produce sweeper tenticles, can candy canes produce long sweepers? How likely is it that a frogspawn would produce sweepers and how long can they get?

No sweepers on candy canes, torch corals are the ones who produce sweeper tentacles. The probability of a torch coral to produce sweepers is close to 100% if another coral is placed within a few inches. Sweepers can vary greatly in length. Usually 6" between the torch and another coral is enough distance.

I second the torch info. I have one that has two large heads. The sweepers are 2-3x the length of anything my frogspawn or hammer put out! THe only problem I have had with my frogspawn started once it got use to my tank. Now it is growing so fast I am having problems fitting it in the tank. Avoid the torch in a small tank. A frogspawn, hammer, or candycane are good choices.

Okay, but how long can the frogspawns sweepers extend from one head? I'm leaning toward the frogspawn over the candy, but I don't want to dedicate 1/2 of my 10gal to leaving room for sweeper tenticles.
