The issue with Candy cane is that placement depends greatly on the type and intensity of your light. I grow mine with great success on the sand, but I have one head that broke away one day I was cleaning and I placed it behind a bunch of rocks on the back of the tank and I now have 5 heads there.
I would use this list for placement and move it down or up according to how you see it perform.

This is mine under my DIY T5/LED hybrid. If you look close, you can see that the heads facing to the sides, are more inflated. This tells me that they are stretching a bit to get more light. I can't go further down and I won't, since they are doing fine, but this should give you an idea of what to look for.
