canister vs hob

What are the benefits of a using a Canister filter as opposed to an HOB filter and vice versa? I've never used a canister filter and would kind of like giving one a try, I'm just curious of the pros and cons.

I plan on keeping a 47 gallon tank with approximately 50 lb's of lr. And probably keep 4 Kuda's or Erectus, I haven't decided yet. Also a pistol/goby pair most likely and/or a firefish.

Canister- more filtration.
Hob-space saving-air exchange
Other than that, they are very simmilar. With 50lb of lr, you have alot of filtration already./ Make sure you get some flow in there. I know theyre horses, but they need a little flow too. :)

You could get the HOB Cannister from Magnum:D

I like the cannisters better myself. I like the design and the versatility. I alos like that the return is a hose which can be attached to a UV or a spraybar.

pledosophy- I like canisters as well. They are certainly more versitile. However, I do believe--just curious if you agree-- they are basically the same as HOB(just larger) ... :)

The only disadvantage of a canister for me is the hassle of cleaning it. It's easier to remove/replace a filter pad in a HOB filter as opposed to unhooking and taking apart a canister to clean it.

Remember, trapped food in a canister raises nitrates... keep it clean if you go that route. I'll admit, I do things the easiest way possible... it's easier to wash off a filter pad 2 or 3 times a week than it is to take apart a canister and wash out the media/sponge.

I think that the cannister I have is different from any HOB that I have seen. The HOB's tend to have a filter pad, some floss, and maybe some carbon, then your full. The fluval 304 I have has a filter pad, some floss and some carbon. But there is also a tray for the phosban, and one for the bio media. I appreciate the versatlity of the cannisters. I also like the ability to hook the cannister up to a UV through a direct hose.
