Cannister Filter Used as Vacuum

I am in need of a general tank cleanup. Was thinking of buying a canister filter and fill it with a floss fiber and make an end for vacuuming my 75 gal reef tank. Anyone doing this or is there a better idea out there?

I just use a gas syphon (only used for the tank) and toss the end in a clean filter sock. rubber band on and let the water back in the tank, sump, or a bucket first. If your set up for it you can stick the end in the sump line and just run into the sump, basically pulling the gunk.off the bottom instead of the top but using your sump to clean ;) then.you will probally need to do a little sump maint too tho.

I want to use something a little more powerful than a siphon. I have the one that hooks up to a faucet but its not quite strong enough plus I loose the water down the sink. I might be able to make an adapter hose and run it into a sock in a bin and save the water. Don't know if the sock would be enough filtering to put the water back into the tank though.

What are you trying to remove?
I blast rocks with baster, syphon out detritus, put the water back in, clean out the sump and then do a water change. If you don't put the water back you will use tons of water and salt mix and have to keep alot prepped on hand to do a good change but that's your personal choice. A hand syphon let's you pick and choose what you want to pick up, you squeeze for more suction plus they are under $10 so that's wonderful in my book. Much more force and you suck up sand and risk hurting coral/anemone. The whole tank (rocks sand) are your biological filter you don't want to mess with them excessively.

I setup my canister filter every few weeks or so for a week. When I'm ready to take it away, I use it to vacuum the rocks and the sump. Works just fine and does a good job.
