I know this question has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find specifically what I wanted to know so here goes!
How many out there use external power filters or cannister filters instead of a sump setup and how successful have you been?
Right now I have a sump set up(40 gal) on a 120XH tank. I haven't had any problems to date, but I don't know how long that will last. My problem is, all the extra gadgets and add ons to the initial sump setup, like water makeup circuits, in sump skimmers, refugiums, power heads to insure the syphon doesn't break on the overflow, etc. tend to take some of the fun out of it for me, not to mention cash! On top of all this, you can't hide return and feed lines going out of or into the tank so why not just ditch the sump and it's potential problems and use good old fashioned external filtration? I know you gain capacity with a sump, but is it worth it?
