cannot get bulkheads to stop leaking

I cannot get the 2 bulkheads on the tank to stop leaking other than that, that is all I see at this time. But I have taken them off and put them back on and still leak.

Anyone else have this problem? If so what did you do?

Welcome to my world

Here is how I stopped the bulkhead leak, I took some plumbers putty, rolled in into a long strip and placed it between my seal and the wall of the tank. Not real big just enough to give a good cover. When I tightened the bulkhead it squeezed the putty flat and I trimmed off the excess and it solved my problem

Good luck:mad:

My gaskets is on the inside.

How long is the plumber putty good for?

Guess I will find out

If you overtighten them they will leak gasket should be on the inside of the tank, make sure they don't turn either when you tighten them up.

I've taken 50 year old faucets off and the putty was still soft where it wasn't exposed to air, but that's with fresh water. If memory serves, it's just clay, mineral oil and limestone (I think).

I had trouble with this on my 120. After much effort of tightening, loosening, adjusting position, etc...I finally just replaced the bulkhead and it stopped. I couldn't see anything wrong with the bulkhead or gasket, but it just kept leaking.

I just put a rubber washer on the inside and outside of the tank, Teflon taped the threads, tightened down the bulkhead, and all was well.

I didn't try teflon tape on the thread is that what I'm doing wrong?

Clark did you put the seal on the bulkhead then put the putty on the seal and then put the bulkhead in place?

lonnie, what is leaking?

is water leaking from, say, the overflow INTO the drain pipe

or is it leaking through the bulkhead, out of the tank, and onto the floor?

I say, what do you do with any other product that doesn't work as described?

return/exchange it

why should you have to modify the thing to work when its supposed to just work in the first place

I remember you said you were ordering from savko, I remember another guy had some problems with savko bulkheads a while back...maybe just one of those things

I got it to stop leaking for the moment at least.. I think it was do to the pressure of the pipe pushing on the bulkhead not letting me get a good seal.

I did end up using plumbers putty on one of the bulkheads since I had it apart.

Going to filling up the tank a little more to see if there are any more leaks I sure hope not.

I used some silicon between the gasket and the glass to prevent leaks and have never had a problem. Don't know if that's the best practice, but it's worked for me. I guess if I ever wanted to replace the gasket I'd just have to use a razor blade to remove.

silicon is actually probably better because it cures fully and is used in aquariums anyhow. its what i used with no problems.

Good idea to find out where the leak is coming from.
My limited experience:
1. Tighten too much, and crack, bulkhead is broken, throw away and try a new one.

I got advice: clean around hole, clean gasket, and make sure it is absolutely flat. Gasket on inside of tank, put screw shaped thing thru it, and thread nut shaped thing on outside of tank, finger tight, and then maybe a little more, 1/4 turn.

Once I took the nut off a full tank and the pressure of the water on the screw kept gasket tight and the thing from leaking. Amazing.

The point is the seal of the gasket is realy important.

2. Once I had the gasket and the nut on correctly, and I was screwing in a connector. It leaked a little, so I tightened it and crack, it leaked more now. It was a crack in the thread part that extends out of the tank , so I drained the sump, removed the bulkhead, used some superglue to glue the crack, carefully, and when I reassembled it, to my surprise, it worked beautifully.

FWIW,
Kathy
