CANON EF28-70mm f3.5-4.5MKII MACRO

That's a pretty old lens. It's not really idea for macro use but it is an "L" so I'd expect overall image quality to be pretty good.
 
Another thing to keep in mind is that on a crop sensor camera (Rebel, XT, 10D, 20D, 30D) it's going to behave like a 45mm lens. For general purpose use you're going to want something wider.
 
I think you're talking about two different animals here- the L lens is going to cost around $1200 and the f3.5-4.5 is gonna be $300 or less. Regardless, as beerguy said, it's not ideal for macros- you could't fill the frame with polyps, a few branches maybe. If you got the L though, it'd be supremely sharp :)
 
Macro is all about magnification. You want a lens that will get close to 1:1 [aka lifesize] magnification. The 24-70 will do 1:3.5, or 1/3 lifesize- that's not bad but it's not great either. I'll dig up a couple examples to show you what I mean.

sorry, that's the only link i could find to a 28-70mm. only other links were to comparisons of the 24-70 vs 28-70
 
I don't think that you'd be happy with that lens. What camera body do you have?

If you can't afford the Canon 100mm f2.8, Sigma and Tamron both makes macro lenses around that focal length for less money.
 
well there are 2 really good lens to consider.
the Tamron 28-75 XR f2.8
and the Sigma 24-70 EX f2.8

can get both for around the $330 range and are very good.
I have the tamron and it is razor sharp even wide open at 2.8
GREAT LENS and GREAT IQ
 
thanks for the info... i'm considering the canon 100mm, i'll just have to save up a bit more...

05Xrunner... are the 2 lenses you mentioned the ones that beerguy was speaking of or are there lenses that are more like the canon 100m?
 
The thing to check, in terms of macro performance, is magnification. It will be listed as a ratio, as in "1:1". 1:1 is true macro, also referred to as lifesize. Do you have a link to the 35-105?
 
forgot to mention gregr... thanks for sharing your pics, great shots. I hope to be able to get some pics like that soon... i'll see if i can find a link to that lens, it was on ebay but i think it sold already
