Canon EOS Rebel XSI Picture Quality?

I know the heading makes me sound like a newb (which i am) because i know that its not the camera that determines the quality, its the person. Having said that, there has to be some definition of a cameras ability for picture quality, right? Well anyways, i have a canon eos rebel xsi and love using it on land, however i am going to the caymans soon and have a few questions about underwater photography. I am pretty comfortable using my camera on land and i get pleasing results. My question is, will i get at least somewhat decent results with it? I am very comfortable in the water so buoyancy wont be too much of a problem (i hope). I have been diving with my old sealife camera with one strobe and i am very pleased with the results. I just want to know if i made a decent investment with getting an ikelite housing and one strobe?, or if i am going to regret this impulse purchase and spending all my High school graduation money on an underwater housing?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

PS: Please forgive my newbness. I really don't know any fancy camera stuff. Just the basics, but i hope i know them well enough to pass for an amateur photographer.

Thank You

James

it's actually the lens that determines the picture quality. If you put a piece of crap lens on a $2,000 camera, the pictures will look like a piece of crap. If you put a $2,000 lens on a piece of crap camera, the pictures will look like $2,000. So, whatever camera you get, just get a good lens and you'll be good to go.

A good photographer would be able to get very good photos with that camera and a good lens on land or underwater.

And as curlykid pointed out, the lens is the largest determining factor of potential quality. That said, the lens and back are but tools, and how the photographer uses them is how great shots are made.
