Canon Rebel XSi?

I have been using a point and shoot camera for everything and am looking to move up to a DSLR.
I want to be able to shoot some decent macro pictures with whatever I get.
Have been looking at the Canon Rebel XSi 12.2 MP and would then get a 100mm macro lens for it. Would this be a good set up?
Reason I like the XSi is the fact that it has the live view capability, something I like about the point and shoot digital cameras.

Wondering if anyone else if using this camera and how they like it or if I should be looking at a different model (around the same price) and why.

XSi is a very good camera. But, make suer that you realise that Liveview on a dSLR doesn't serve the same role as on a p&s. The primary composition tool on a dSLR is the viewfinder. The Liveview is a useful option for things like macros or awkward places. But, the camera is too heavy to be held at arm's length (as you do with a p&s). In addition, the speed of focus and options using Liveview are limited and much less powerful than a p&s.

It is a great camera, but the fact that it has the live view capability is a bad reason to like it. As stated above, its uses are...limited at best.

I'm not sure about the liveview option, but I do have the predecessor and love it (the XTi). I would highly recommend the canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens as well, I think you'll be rather happy with those.

Live view comes in very handy for tripod macro work. You can zoom in 10x to really make sure you have the object in focus before taking the shot.

While zooming in 10x for pinpoint macro focusing is one of Live View's only real perks, that isn't why he is happy the camera a has live view. He thinks it works like a point and shoot live view...and...it ain't gunna happen. To the OP, I would be surprised if you used live view for more than 2% of your pictures. I likely use it for .002% of mine (one out of 500 or so). 95-99% of the time you do use live view, a tripod will also be used.

After re-reading the first post, I see what you mean. And you're right about hardly using it... I have not used it for actual photos yet (just messing around with it and figuring it out) but then again I haven't taken any macro shots of my tank yet either.
