I was thinking about purchasing the Canon Rebel XS 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera.
On black fridays sears is having it on sale w/Canon 75-300mm Lens for $579.99 or you can just get the camera without the extra lens for $479.99

Is this a good camera? Is the lens worth getting?

I am not a professional photographer and just want to take some pictures as a hobby. I don't want to spend a bajillion dollars on a setup.

Is there another camera you would recommend that is equivalent in features but priced lower or is this a good bang for your buck camera?
thanks

I have the XSi with the 75-300 and the kit (18-55) lens. The 75-300 is not worth it if it is the non-IS model. Get body & kit lens and the 55-250 IS lens separately. It is much better than the 75-300 and not to pricey (around $225).

I like my XTi so I'm sure the XS would be great too. I'd say you should get it. I only have the kit lens, so no comment on the other lens. I would recommend getting a good lens that can zoom in though. With the kit lens you're basically just working with a fancy point and shoot. Only having the kit lens is one of my biggest (really only) frustrations with my camera.
