It is always better to have two cameras. If you're going to an event that no need good shots, bring the cheapest one. Rebel XT is mostly for awesome shooting events.

Yeah, I go by the same philosophy. The only issue is that the 995 isnt a very fast camera. If I were to sell it, id just want a faster (and smaller) camera. Otherwise I do love it still. Besides, without a macro lens for the XT, the 995 is still king at macros.

Just curious. I saw with the rebate on the canon rebel its pretty close in price to the D50 I was wanting. How much better is the Rebel XT compared to the D50?

I have a 20D and have played with a D50 and D70 but unfortunately no experience with the XT. This may be of some help:

They are similar, mirror lockup is a must for my needs so I'd have little choice...

May want to look into which lenses you like and see if there is a big price difference between the two brands... it's the lenses in the end that you are "marrying". The body will likely get upgraded at some point.
