Canon vs. Nikon

So ...

My brother's a closet camera nerd who's done lighting and sound in films / TV / low-budget Sundance-type documentaries and so forth for years. He also works with not-very-closeted people who rely on cameras for their living.

His Brotherly Advice on Cameras, after I bought an XSi during a Boxing Day sale, came down to, "Nice body, kit lens is awfully slow, can you get a Kikon lens adapter? had you waited six months you could've got "affordable" [I swear I heard the quotation marks] 1080p video."

My response boiled down to, "I know, I'll buy something when I figure out what I want to do with the camera, don't care, not for $600 with bag, 2 batteries, and kit lens."

:)

And, after dissing the kit lens and lack of video, he spent a couple hours contentedly playing with the camera ... mostly at high ISO because he hates flashes.

Even my wife has scaled back her criticism of me for dropping some Christmas money on a "Freudian object that happens to take pictures" once she saw some of the low-light, flashless pictures I took.

I think it boils down to: DSLR cameras have come waaay down in price the last few years; DSLRs take good pictures with kit lenses; better lenses rely heavily on the user to take better pictures; there are reasons to prefer Canon over Nikon (and Nikon over Canon), but most folks who want to snap pics of their kids and pets will have their eyes gloss over while the reasons get patiently explained to them -- the arguments end up being rather esoteric.

This is hysterical. As a photographer who spends a lot of time on various photography boards, I can't believe I found a canon vs. nikon thread here.

The world is officially coming to an end.

They both make great bodies and great lenses. They also both make crappy lenses, although I think Nikon's lower end glass fairs better than Canon's but once you get up into pro level glass, it's all good.

For what it's worth, for 35mm I shoot Nikon mostly due to owning a large amount of their high-end glass for years. The best camera they made in my opinion was the F series. I went all over the world with an F4 and you can't believe the abuse it took. You could literally beat a man to death with it and then take a picture of his corpse. The new digital bodies just aren't built that robust - by anyone - but I've never had a problem with either the D1x or the D2x in any kind of weather.

All of that said, I still prefer shooting medium format film...

dpmatty,

Folks who rely on equipment for their living tend to have a different view of the equipment than folks who rely upon the same equipment for their hobby. Hobbyists tend to get wrapped in the equipment; professionals tend to get wrapped up in the job.

For the hobbyist, much of the joy derived from the equipment isn't so much in using it ... but in researching it and having it. For the professional, it's more a question of whether it or not the equipment is doing what it's supposed to ... and making sure the equipment will last long enough so that the price of everything gets recouped.

At the extreme end, hobbyists often get so wrapped up in their equipment they lose site of what it's actually for (taking pictures, lighting a reef tank, etc.).

JIMO and all that.

And I'll freely admit that I spent an hour this AM trying to figure out if I can affordably get a walking around lens that will hit my yummy spot more than the included kit lens. Said lens seems to cost about $1000, so I'll have to keep my eyes open for a better deal :D

Hey, I like talking gear as much as the next fellow, I just get amused by the constant Nikon vs. Canon debate.

What are you looking for in a walking around lens? If you're willing to buy used, check out www.keh.com. These guys are great and their rating and condition specs are dead on the money, if not conservative in they buyers favor. I know many who have purchased from them without ever hearing a single complaint.

I'm still nosing around, but a Canon EF-S 17-55mm is the right idea. It's ... ummm ... a little pricey. But the key points here are "fast" and "does well in low light", which, I assume, means I'll able to take pictures in my 1920's-era house with precious little natural light on the main floor.

A Canon EF-S 17-85mm, however, comes in at less than a mortgage payment :)

And I like image stabilisation, even though I know it adds $$$ to the price of a lens.

Spend some worthwhile money and take a photo class/seminar if you aren't a professional. One I went to last year had everyone send in two pictures they deemed their best or most interesting, amazing you can take great photographs with almost any camera. The converse also being true, that while having great equipment gives you flexibility the P&Ss don't have, it doesn't guarantee great photos.

What would you advise if I had a choice between Nikon D70 + 18-70mm and 70-210mm Nikon Lenses (original glass) vs. New CANON EOS Rebel 450D/XSi D-SLR Camera with CANON 18-55mm IS LENS, Wide Angle Lens, 2X Telephoto Lens?

Many thanks
tahir

Give a reason NOT to Buy a Canon EOS 7D

Give a reason NOT to Buy a Canon EOS 7D

OKay, I've done my research, I've sought and gained counsel, I've heard arguments from all sides, so it's come to this:

Give a reason NOT to Buy a Canon EOS 7D

"There's one ping-pong match that never ends"”the battle between Nikon and Canon for DSLR supremacy. No sooner does Nikon come out with the D300S (a $1699, 12.3 megapixel (MP), 7-frame-per-second model) than Canon follows suit with the 7D, a $1699 18MP camera that shoots at a speedy 8 fps. And, of course, both units are capable of capturing HD video clips. The moral of the story: Boys will be boys and we can be thankful for these toys"”although close to two grand is a pretty expensive ride for either. Still, such ongoing competition is wonderful news for photographers as cameras seem to get better almost every day. As such, Canon didn't have to ask twice if we wanted to hop on this merry-go-round and put the 7D through its paces. Click on to see what we found when the music stopped"¦"

I'll own this for a long time, so I can justify the expense, given future lens Upgrades.

/** Crickets **/

It's a great camera. The viewfinder alone is amazing. It actually makes it hard for me to use my 5D.

In my experience:

Nikon makes great cameras - its their only business and they've been doing it along time. Before digital Nikon was the king, but Canon took the early lead and held it until recently in the digital realm. Now both make perfect cameras for getting great images. Its much more the photographer than the camera.

Nikons bodies feel better, they're more ergonimic, and feel natural. They are now legendary (and i've heard the shape is patented), the bodies also feel more substantial and sturdier - no contest IMO in this area.

Lenses: Canon wins in this department. They have better lens in the mid-grade department than Nikon. Both low end lens are comparable, Nikon makes better pro glass IMO.
Nikon only makes cameras? Check their website. I've used Nikon microscopes as long as 20 years ago and they make many other optical products.
Price: It seems Canon normally wins this race. If price is most important go with canon. You wont regret it. That being said there are some Nikkor lens I love so much that I'd always have to have a Nikon body around to use.

Either way you are going to get great piece of hardware plenty capable enough of taking incredible pictures with proper technique and eye.

The Canon EOS 7D is winning this debate thus far.

I haven't pulled it yet, but my finger is on the trigger, and the safety is now "OFF"!
