Canon XS

I got the XS for Christmas and I think it will be good for taking tank shots and close ups of life forms in the tank, yes? I have several Canon lens but not a macro, recommend a good inexpensive one to fit the Canon? I could still trade it for the XSi model but don't really think 2 more megapixels will matter in this range (10 - 12? Recommendations please, thank you.

My normal mantra is that the camera body doesn't matter. This camera is an exception to that. The XS is a really stripped down model and, in my opinion, they dumbed it down too much; making manual mode almost unusable.

You're correct that the number if pixels really isn't a factor but I think that that XSi would perform better for you in the long run.

For in-tank macro work, it's hard to beat the Canon 100mm f/2.8 (on any Canon body).

Well I did it, cost me 200.00 to trade up to the XSi but they had one, picked up two 4 gb cards and a tripod. I've read manual and been setting the camera up and taken a few tank shots, have put onto computer yet but I know I'll have to save up for the 100mm Macro to really get the shots I want. I really like the feel of the camera so far, thanks for encouraging me to step up from the XS, that's what I really wanted to do all the time I guess I just wanted someone that knows to tell me that's the way to go. Thanks beerguy!

Mmm touche, Canon really disappointed me when they announced the Xs.

Oh well. I bought the XS. I am really a newb when it comes to photography. I will be away from home a lot and with a 6 month old in the house we needed a step up from our Kodak Easyshare we bought a couple years ago. The jump from a 4megapixel to 10 (also, low end point and shoot to entry level DSLR) is amazing.

After reading this post I was somewhat disapointed with my purchase. In retrospect the $200 just isn't in my budget right now.

My wife absolutely loves the XS. I think we have gotten our money's worth out of the camera in two days. She has taken a load of pics of the baby.

Tonight I took a few shots of my FW tank to test out how it works. This is such a huge jump up from what I am used to that I am very easy to please.

I can't wait to start taking pics of my SW tank.

It will probably take me a year to learn all the features of the XS. At that time if I find it limiting perhaps I'll upgrade. For now it's more camera than I need.

Don't worry too much about it. That camera will still produce excellent pictures when used properly. My beef with it is primary with the controls. Since I shoot exclusively in manual mode that camera would drive me to drink (which isn't actually all that hard).

Cheers
