Canopy Cooling

Im building a wood canopy this weekend and im putting 3 250watt metal halides and 2 6foot vho's under it. what size and how many fans should i put on the canopy to keep it all cool.

I would use at least two 4" or bigger fans. One on each side should be ok, but the more the merrier!

And should I remove the glass lids when I put the canopy on, or should I take them out?

I would remove the glass lids. You are going to generate alot of heat with those lights. Evaportation with help with regulating your tank. That is unless you have a chiller.

I also agree with LTCrunch, the more the merrier. I currently have two 400W MH's and I run 2 fans in the canopy right now, but I am debating on running two more.

Also consider how high the lights will be off the water. If you are currently running PC's or MH's with lower wattage I would run them for less time until your corals get acclimated.

Ehutchby, as for quite fans, most 12v DC fans are quite, I guess it's all personal preference. I got mine from a local Radio Shack and they aren't loud at all. I guess the need for cooling out weighs the need for silence in certain cases.

I would use a fan blowing across the water by each lamp.

these are the fans I use.. The fans are on the lowest speed and you can't hear them at all and it dropped the temp 3+ degrees... A little expsesive but highly recomend them.

my plan is to have the front 2 come on when the daylights come on & for now, i probably won't run the back 2...they are there for when i can afford a reefkeeper lite & will set a temp program that will kick the back 2 on if tank temps get too high

there are also (5) 2" round holes in the top of the canopy for heat to escape via convection currents....those can be seen near the beginning of the thread
