canopy

Hi, I notice there are a few woodworker, carpenters on the list. I am hopeless so wondered if anyone would be interested in making a canopy for my 75 gal. tank. Nothing fancy just want to cover the lights. Thanks, Karen

I would be willing to do one, I made the canopy for my 75.

here's a partially finished picture:

And here it is completed:

Hi, That looks great. I want something that will only set about a foot about the tank and fairly light. Can you give me an estimate for the cost? Thanks, Karen

I can put together some drawings and a price in a day or two.
So, you want it only about a foot tall? What kind of lights are going to be in it?
If you have any other info or special requests about it just let me know!

edit
I just measured mine and it is exactly 12" tall, so that's probably close to what you are looking for.

Hi, I have a power compact strip light and moonlights. I want them fairly close to the tank without being right on top. My stand is very plain and so want to keep the canopy the same--flat doors no beveling. For some reason your canopy looks taller than that but then again I can never find a tape measure when I need one so I guess between 9 and 12 inches what ever is easiest. Karen

Well, I would be more than happy to at least put a drawing together to give you an idea. Do you have any pictures of your stand that you could send me? It will help me come up with a design that matches.

Yeah, in that picture it does look taller than 12", that's why I had to measure! I was picturing 12" being really close! You probably want right in the 6-10 range, I would think. For example, the Oceanic hoods are 8" I believe. I like the height of mine, because I can still reach into the tank fairly well. I could stand to lose about 4" but I went with premade doors, and that was the only size I had available. I have VHO lights, and they are about 7 inches off the water, they really should be closer.

I do not have a picture but it really is just the rectangle with a flat center door and two open cubbies made for shelves on each end. I would appreciate seeing a drawing. Thanks, Karen

Finally found a tape measure. I think 8 inches is what I want. I also saw one where the whole top opens sort of like a piano bench, would something like that be possible? Then I could keep the front plain. Thanks, Karen

I think that is definately possible.
I will try to put something together in the next couple of days so you can look at it, and I'll come up with a price.

Also, do you want something stained, or just painted? It would affect the cost, as far as what type of wood to use, plus I want to match the existing stand as much as possible.

Thanks!

Ok, here are a couple of very quick renderings. I'm not sure what color you want, so I used black, which doesn't really show up that well in the pics.:) The inside would actually be white, I just didn't do it for these.

The way I designed this is, the top is 8" above the tank, and the sides extend down about 1" to cover the plastic tank trim, and to provide a lip to lock it in place. So visibly you see 9" of wood.

I put the hinge right in the middle of the top, which should work out well. If I can get the right kind of piano hinge, you should be able to flip the whole thing back so that it can rest on the back half of the hood.

I haven't put a price together yet, but I don't imagine it will be very much, especially if it is going to be painted because I could use all pine. I'm thinking in the $50-$75 range, although I haven't priced piano hinges either, so I don't have a feel for the cost of those. I will try to get the pricing together soon, as long as this concept is what you were thinking.

Let me know what you think!

Perfect--exactly what I had in mind! Pine should be fairly light too wouldn't it? It will look great with this stand. Thank you, Thank you. Karen (and I LOVE the price too).

Hey Karen, sorry I haven't responded earlier, this week has just gotten away from me! Yes pine should be fairly light, but it will still be a little heavy just because of the size.
I haven't had a chance to get a price together yet, but I am going to run over my lunch hour today to get some numbers. One question I have, which doesn't really affect the price much, do you have anything hanging on the back of the aquarium that I would need to leave room for, like a filter or anything? If you can see in that picture with the hood open, there is a piece of wood that runs across the back to support the hood on the tank. It's much more stable this way, but I could leave some blockouts, or change the design slightly if I need to.
Thanks!

Hi, I have an overflow box on the back and a fluval cannister intake and return so I guess I would like the back as open as possible without sacrificing stability. Thanks, Karen

No problem. Is the overflow to one side, or in the middle? I think what I could do is leave some space on each side, and just have a support in the middle, like 6"-12" wide.

I can put the overflow just about anywhere so that sounds great. I would prefer to have it on one end and the fluval on the other and that should work out well. Karen

Hey Karen, sorry to barge in on your thread here, but I couldn't help but notice the amazing work being offered here for the canopy. I'm in Yankton, SD not too far north of you guys, and was wondering if CH would make a stand too? I'm sure the price would be quite a bit more due to all the wood involved. New to the hobby and bought a cheapie and regretting it big time! Thanks a ton guys!

I certainly could make a stand too.
The only concern I would have is how to get it to you. I wouldn't know how to go about shipping it!
What size tank and what kind of look are you looking for?
I have another stand and hood in the works for somebody, but I could put you next on the list and at least get some pricing togeter.

By the way Karen, did you end up getting that other hood that came up for sale?

Hi Chris, Things got a little hectic around here and I hope to go look at it this weekend so still don't know if its going to work for me or not. Karen

It shouldn't be too dificult for me to come get it if it all works out. I'm only about 2.5 hours away or so. I have a 75 gallon tank and would want it to be sort of tall because I'm planning on getting a sump fuge made here pretty soon, so I would need room for my skimmer and piping and all that good stuff. Have you seen the white stand for sale on here under the OMS link under metal halide canopy? That is AWESOME, and I've tried messaging him to inquire more but haven't gotten anywhere, that would be exactly what I'm looking for. If it works better I'm at hoover86@hotmail.com for communication. I'm deffinetely interested if I don't hear back from the other guy, because he's selling the stand, canopy and all his lighting with metal halides and VHO for around $500. Let me know. Thanks!
