sugar works great, not magic either. my nitrates are now under 20ppm from over 200ppm. doubling the live rock would be pretty expensive adding 2 tsp of sugar everyday for a month would not.
Can't get the nitrates down

Wow!.....Here's my 14 years:
1. Lot's of live rock.
2. Remote deep sand bed.
3. Remove ALL bio-balls.
4. Large water change.
5. Buy a larger skimmer.
6. Keep your filter sock clean (or remove it altogether).
7. buy a Denitrator.
8. keep your live rock clean. (blow off).
9. Don't over feed.
10 REGULAR water changes.
If you do these 10 things you will NEVER have nitrates again.

Cheaper solution, 1 teaspoon every other day, 25% water changes Bi weekly, BYE BYE NITRATES. Allthough I am an over feeder from WAY BACK, with a larger CUC, everyone is happy. Lose the BIO BALLS! Good Luck!!
