Is there anyone on RC that is captive breeding any of the species of tridacnid with some success? I see alot of pics of clams squirting eggs in tanks, just wondering if anyone has tried to raise them?

You really need a large volume of water, i attended a lecture a while ago from walt smith and he stated how to get them to breed, but i never tried it since i don't have the space for it.

I have been reading "Giant Clams" By D. Knop. It goes into the details in that book. They have pics of hatching and nursing facilitys on a couple of islands. Pretty neat setup.

the way to get them to breed is to stress them out for an entire day then add cold water to their tank and they will breed. The stressing part is that they would put them at the shore of the beach in the beaming sun then they would actually put them on the beach for a couple of hours then place them in a large pool with cool water and they would spawn in the evening.

I wonder how they figured that out? Someone probably got frustated and put one in the sun and went and had a couple of beers.

In Knops book, they have pics of these giant clams laying out in the sun.

Actually serotonin injections are more consistent with inducing spawning-usually in minutes. This works well with species have large byssuss.

In a small system, the eggs just get polyspermia (more than one sperm enter the egg) and will not develope.

Actually the sperm is recovered and diluted usually about 1cc per 5 gal bucket to reduce chance of polyspermia.
