Captive maroon trio???

I can pick up small CB maroons. I would love at least a pair or even a trio. My thoughts are they will squabble until like other fish I have a dominant female and male and the third will be ostracized. To do or go with naked/midnight/domino surer thing???

The vast majority of the time.... a trio ends up being a pair and a dead single... just go for a pair, imo / ime.

stick with getting a bonded pair, if you want maroons. It seems like maroons are more difficult then most to pair. You can always try pairing up your own. No guaranty that they will bond though.

I can't recall to have ever seen a trio of maroons in pictures from the wild, only pairs.
While most other anemonefish species will allow juveniles to coexisted with a mature pair in a large enough anemone, maroons seem to be different and do not allow juveniles besides the resident pair. Juveniles might be hanging out in near by smaller anemones if there are such around.

The most tolerant anemonefish species towards conspecies and other species of anemonefish are clarkii, and maybe some of the skunks. All others are more likely to kill off unwanted extras.
Those that manage to keep a large number of ocellaris or percula in a tank are usually successful because they started out with a batch of juveniles (most of the time from the same hatch) and because the numbers of fish make it difficult for the dominant pair to single out one.
But even this approach is highly unlikely to work with maroons.
I've bred them once and as soon as the larva are through metamorphosis and have the adult coloration they start fighting among each other. I lost all but 5 of that hatch before noticing that.

My boy decided that even the heartbreak of two deciding to battle to the end was too much a risk. They used to talk about the females keeping a harem of sub dominate males.

That one looks pretty common as far as color goes. I would bet it would look much more dull in person. Those pics look pretty blue.

There are no harems with anemonefish. It's almost always just one pair and a few tolerated "reservists" in case one of the partners falls victim to a predator.
The few cases where two sexually active males were found with one female or two females spawning with one male are rare exceptions due to circumstances that are difficult if not impossibleโ€‹ to replicate in a tank.

I wish the "pairing" thread would have been easier for me to find. "Except for premnas..."

Specimens. 3"and up + 1"1/2 with a screen separator for the tank. Introduced at the same time or two weeks apart ( max) . The way I did it.
