Depends on what your trying to keep. If you stock a lot of softies/leathers it is a good idea to run carbon to cut down on any chemicals they release. As for GFO if your trying to keep SPS it would be a good idea to run it. I personally run GFO 24/7 but only run carbon once every 2-3 months for about 3-7 days to get rid of yellowing water.
CArbon is a nice water polisher and you will definitely see improvement in water clarity and removing many other bad stuff from your water. It has been tested and proven to work in the aquarium world for ages now and they are as common as running a skimmer . For the GFO, I personally don't like this type of media and prefer PO4x4 media for the clean pellet format , longevity and ease of use in the BRS dual reactor. This media will keep phosphates in check and that to me is a important part of my setup. Make sure you have a good test kit for phosphates and you will be good to go !
