Carbon for Precision Marine Waste Collector ... Is it Safe ... ?

So I dusted off my Precision Marine Waste Collector and have been using it to capture skimmate as it can hold just a bit more volume than the standard collection cup on my skimmer. The problem, of course, is that skimmate tends to smell less than favorable and quite a bit of air runs through the collector and into the surrounding area.

The waste collector has a 'Carbon Cap' where one can presumably put a little bag of carbon to quell any odor from the skimmate. I have used carbon pads for this purpose on my deep fryer, for example. However, I was curious if I can simply take some Seachem Matrix Carbon, throw it in a filter bag, rinse it, and then place it in the 'Carbon Cap'? Will it absorb the odor the same way the pads do in my deep fryer? And since Matrix Carbon is 'for aquarium use only', are there any safety issues with using it dry in terms of particles entering the environment and being breathed in?

Thoughts?

I would try the carbon pads you use for your fryer. I have used the ones from API for not only aquarium use but also on the intake of my air purifier for my house. I do know that the small package of Seachem's Matrix comes in its own pouch so that is also another option. There are no worries about running it dry.

The other option is to empty out your skimmer cup more often. :) I have to clean my MRC twice a week.

Thanks! I happen to be out of the fryer pads but I did have some extra Matrix Carbon (and an empty filter bag) which is why I was thinking of using that instead.

I've been having to empty this thing daily, it's just ... stinky. :eek1:

My big concern was whether or not it was safe to run Matrix Carbon dry, so thanks again! :)
