So I dusted off my Precision Marine Waste Collector and have been using it to capture skimmate as it can hold just a bit more volume than the standard collection cup on my skimmer. The problem, of course, is that skimmate tends to smell less than favorable and quite a bit of air runs through the collector and into the surrounding area.
The waste collector has a 'Carbon Cap' where one can presumably put a little bag of carbon to quell any odor from the skimmate. I have used carbon pads for this purpose on my deep fryer, for example. However, I was curious if I can simply take some Seachem Matrix Carbon, throw it in a filter bag, rinse it, and then place it in the 'Carbon Cap'? Will it absorb the odor the same way the pads do in my deep fryer? And since Matrix Carbon is 'for aquarium use only', are there any safety issues with using it dry in terms of particles entering the environment and being breathed in?
Thoughts?
