Carbon in Combo with Filter Socks

I am currently running a small sump with my DT. I have an HOB skimmer and socks in my sump. My water is fairly clear but feel it can be better and was thinking of running carbon in combo with the socks. I'm actually not sure exactly how to use the carbon in conjunction with the socks. Do I just put the carbon in mesh bags and throw them in the socks? Any further direction would be appreciated.

I would just put it in a filter bag and set it in the sump somewhere first. I run mine passively and it works for me.
