I am speaking with the McWane Center World of Water staff about having a meeting at their facility in January. How does the weekend of the 24th or the 31st sound? Also we need to get a rough estimate of how many are attending. So... if everyone who is interested in attending, and has yet to respond, would make a post in the next few days we can try and get a head count going. In the meantime I will post back with a final date/time. Happy Holidays!!

Here's the scoop. January 24th at 2:00. We will be getting a behind the scenes tour of their exhibits. Also, the staff is allowing us to use their Aquascape theater for a discussion session. One of the senior aquarist has offered to discuss their quarantine protocol for new arrivals as well as basic wet lab technique of skin scrapes for parasite detection. Anybody else that has an interesting topic for discussion can share the floor as well. We are in the process of stocking a 250 gallon reef exhibit and are slowly adding in frags. Frag donations would be much appreciated. If possible, on plugs would be the best, and we are mostly stocking LPS and Softies (with exception of xenia and mushrooms) for now. There is a cost for admission to the center. The World of Water staff explained to me that it would be difficult for the Center to delineate between those (us) attending the meeting vs. someone who is attending the entire center for the day. But, the money is going to a great non-profit science center that is a tremendous boon to our area! It is $11 for adults and $8 for children. Depending on our final turnout, we might get a couple of dollars off per admittance, based on a group discount. Parking is $5, however there is plenty of free parking on the side streets of the McWane Center during the weekends. Come early with some family members and make a day of it. We will have drinks and refreshments on hand. We are still keeping a head count going so let me know if you are, or are not going to attend, as well as any questions thoughts about the meeting. Thanks!

I will be there too. Total noob with a baby little picotope, but I am so in. I am in Hoover and can/will help if you need it. Also have a big house with a finished basement if the McWayne Center falls through or people do not attend due to having to go downtown, pay to park and pay to enter.

It sounds like fun, but I've committed myself to spend LESS this holiday season. And this meeting is scheduled somewhere around the time my credit card bill will be arriving.
I'm lucky that it is just my wife and I. If we had a family, the price might really limit my ability to be a part of this event. In fact, the price might keep many people with families from attending. Two adults, 2 kids, and parking would run over $40.00 total plus fuel if they are driving far to get there.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad there is interest in a group getting together and I will support it as I can. Perhaps I can make the next meeting.

Current head count-17. So far, KraftyfourU, JWJTide21, BhamR6, NACLH2Ofreak, futureyedoc, brandon2432, lewismw, jasontammy, jhowerton, malnurs, ericad289, King Ricky, Rugdog, Toytek, Kwalls, Freddy4130 and Bryzoan. Come one, come all...Happy New Years!

Just wanted to get a final head count for this Sat. meeting, to make sure we have enough food and drinks. Also, anyone who wants to bring frags for donation to the reef exhibit as well as for swapping would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Count me in. I don't have anything to share just yet, though. I recently restarted my aquarium after my little brother wiped it out while I was away.

Hi, I'm totally new to the forum, and the hobby in general. Count me in for Saturday. This sounds cool, and a great chance to meet locals who "know what they're doing!"

One day your girlfriend brings up the idea of a tank, the next you've got a 44 gallon corner unit with fish and LR. Now we're turning it into a reef setup as well. Glad to have found a local 'section'. haha

I'm in. My wife might or might not come. we both work night shift (both RN's) and luckily i dont have to work friday or saturday but she has to work friday night. so just one and if she wakes up in time then will be 2 of us haha.
can i bring anything food or drink wise?

all i have is a rock covered in 2 variations of GSP's. not sure if they want any or have some already. but i can bring to donate if they would want it.
also if anyone has a frag of a yellow figi leather i am looking for one or any yellow soft coral or polyp as well (pm me please).

Thanks,
Chris

I figure we would keep it simple and do pizza's. Always being better hot, I suggest we eat/greet first. With that being said, when you enter the World of Water section(basement floor) at the McWane center, take an immediate left into the snack/concession area. Get some pizza and make yourself at home. Chris if you want to bring a 2 liter of some soda, that would be fine. Bring your frags and hopefully they can be put to good use or maybe trade with someone else. Any questions, feel free to email me, brian@fishmanservices.com. See you there! 2 p.m.
