Of the species posted above, are any collected for the ornamental trade?

Is A. erythrinus really a hawaiian endemic?

because it occasionally shows up in my country but from Indonesia shipments instead. it's a very unusual and cute cardinal. very slow moving, and transparent pink-red.

the organs and bones can be seen and it looks kinda cute.

but they never appear in large numbers. only appear in onesies and twosies.

ok i just checked fishbase,

this is what they say "Eastern Central Pacific: known only from the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Island. Reports of occurrence in other Indo-West Pacific countries are questionable."

apparently A. erythrinus is a member of a complex of very similar looking cardinals.

the one that appear in my country could very well be a different species but similar looking one.

perhaps the one i'm seeing is Apogon doryssa. it probably is then, since it's found in Indonesia.

Thanks for the info Lemon!

Do you know if Apogon erythrinus is found singly or in groups in the wild?

~Michael

i do not know about their wild behaviour, but i'm guessing solitary.

the pictures i've seen of them online, though not many, suggests that they are rather solitary and quiet fishes.

the other complex species which i've seen in my country are always sold singly and only in one or two pieces. if they school in the wild there would probably be more as the collectors will catch all in one shot. my guess here.
