Strange things happen in a tank. I had a pair of Bengai Cardinals for about 2 weeks when overnight one just vanished. No traces of dead fish or any clue whatsoever. Just gone.
My wife really liked them (though I think they are boring) so I went ahead and bought 2 more to make it 3, they sort of school together and that is kind of cool.
Guess what, a couple of weeks later, again from one day to the next..2 of them gone. No traces as with the first one. Not a piece of fish anywhere.
I do have an emerald crab and 2 small decorator crabs that came with the LR and decided to leave them alone until they became an issue. That is the only explanation I have. Though I'd expect to see some sort of indication. Two fish eaten in a night w/o even leaving a small piece floating in the tank???
They are not in the sump. Didn't leave a runaway letter either.
Go figure.
