Caribsea Life Rock cycle experiences

Pitcher Hill Reef Society
I have 80 pounds of caribsea Life Rock cycling in a Rubbermaid brute trashcan with a small amount of rock from my other tank (only about a pound).

I raised ammonia to about .75 with some mysis... This is only day 3, and I'm already seeing an ammonia drop and a small amount of nitrites.

I'm not in any hurry since my new tank isn't even here yet. Just wondering if other people have seen fast cycling with life rock.

So you are cycling the rock in a container before you get your tank? So cycling not curing? I'm waiting on delivery of my 230 and I was going to use the Carib Sea but the cost is holding me back and I ordered 80 pounds of reef saver from BRS. I'll need more so I'm interested to hear your experience.

I don't think "curing" really applies to dry rock. I'm just getting the cycle started and will transfer everywhere when the new tank is set up.

And luckily I paid a little under $3 a pound after an eBay coupon, or else I probably would have gone with the BRS rock.

Sounds pretty normal IMO...
Too often people overdose on the ammonia leading to extended cycling periods..
It should only take a few days to see ammonia levels start to change some..
Now if you said ammonia was zero, nitrites were zero and nitrates were 40 then you may have something magical.. ;)

When I upgraded to my 120g from my 80g, I set the 120 up dry with 80lbs of the Life Rock and 20lbs of the Life Rock Shapes.
Filled the tank with RODI and NSW, added salt to get salinity at 1.027,
once water was to temp, I added to the sump about 10-15 lbs of rock from my 80 along with a 8x8x4 MarinePure Ceramic Block that was also in my 80. After one day, I transferred the fish over, never saw a cycle, no diatoms, no hair algae, no cyano.

Now 4 months in, and still spotless!
