Carpenter Question

Hey guys...its been a couple weeks since I posted last but went on vacation. Vacation was pretty weak (went with family..lol) but when I came home found that someone robbed my house and tried to burn my house down. The fire damage was in the kitchen only and the cabinets were damaged. The adjuster came out and said that they will pay for the entire cabinets to be replaced. How much does something like regular cabinets and cupboards usually cost? My wife and I just bought our first house and have no clue how much we will likely have to work with. Any carpenters have any idea?

Cabinets are generally the most expensive part of your kitchen, if you are going to take the money and do it yourself, I recommend something like Mills Pride from Home Depot or Lowes, or if the insurance co is going to pay the contractor, I recommend Kraft Maid. This could cost as little as a few hundred dollars to well over 10 grand, it all depends on your kitchen and what you want to do.

The Kitchen Design service at Home Depot isn't that bad, and they offer a home improvement loan, which could help you bridge the gap until your insurance agent cuts a check, and their installs are guaranteed.....it's something worth checking out...

But if it was me, I'd probably do it myself....a LOT cheaper

All depends on how the insurance settles the claim.

Glad that no one was hurt and that the fire was contained....mostly that no one was hurt.

Good Luck!!

Honestly too much variance to say. I've never just bought a single cabinet, but replacing all my old cabinets in my kitchen was anywhere from $8k to $22k depending on cabinets and configuration.

I'm really sorry to hear that =( However I am really glad to hear that no one was home at the time, things can be replaced, loved ones can not.

I was never really a religous person before in fact I was aetheist (probably spelled wrong) but the fire was put out by a pane of window glass so needless to say my beliefs are slowly changing.

Unless you are more than a do it yourselfer, and if the insurance company is paying repalcement cost of your kitchen then let a pro do the installation. Kraftmaid are nice cabinets.
Alot of times a cabinet shop will make and install your cabinets, more money but usualy customized more than store bought or ordered.

If you bought a new or fairly new house, you might check with the original builder. Even if they don't have an interest in doing the cabinetry, they might be able to supply you with some documentation about what was in your house before the fire. Hopefully your insurance company is nice and wants to give you the right amount of money to make you "whole", but documentation and proof are good things to fall back on in case you feel they don't come through for you. In an older house photos before and after are good to have. You may have photos of parts of the kitchen as background in family pictures where you didn't realize you had "documented" some parts of the kitchen.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Insurance restoration companies are going to rip you off. These are the people your adjuster will recommend because they give him thousands in freebies for his own home or dinners, tickets to sporting events, golf trips to S.C the list goes on and on. Go to Kraftmaid outlet in Lordstown prices range from $25.00-$100. a cabinet then hire a sub/contractor to install for you. Just google kraftmaid outlet. With the money you'll save buy a whole house monitoring system.

I would go with kraftmaid hands down. I have sold them in the past when I was a Kitchen Caninet Specialist for Lowe's and stand by them. I have seen cabinet orders go from $3,000-$40,000 Alot depends on the type of wood, features of the cabinets, manf, and so on. Best of luck to you.
