Anyone have experience with carpet anemonees in a reef tank? i was thinking about getting one, but not if they do more harm than good.

Please... research this and make sure it's something you really want in your tank!

Larger ones have been known to eat fish... and they all get large!

I have had 3 in my reefing career, the largest was about 18 inches. I just recently (last week) was able to get rid my last and smallest one that I had, it was in my 180gal reef. They take up valuable realestate and can up and start to move around the tank on a whim, stinging anything in their way. They can be difficult to care for too.

With that said, they are truly beautiful animals, especially the blues and purples. To sit and watch them eat is amazing. If I ever put another carpet in a tank of mine, it will be in a clown/anemone tank that gives them plenty of room to roam with an open sand bed that has a nice rocky edge for them to get next to.

Big D, i hear what you're saying. I had one about 4 years ago...it was a blue that i had for about a year and a half, and did grow to be quite enormous (probably about 15")....it was a 180 FOWLR then, i just wanted to know if it was going to kill my corals now that I've started a reef

If it moves around a lot, it will kill your corals. I have a blue/green carpet anemone right now. He seemed to find a good spot in the back of my tank, but is growing and getting close to my corals. I don't have any fish in my tank yet, but I am afraid to add any. I will be getting rid of the carpet as soon as I find a buyer. I'd avoid them and leave them to a species only tank, they can do some damage to corals and eat fish.

I have had carpet anemones since I started reefing 10 years ago. I have grown so used to them, that when one dies, I immediately go out and get another! Of course, the urgency increases because I have a maroon clown who can't live without his carpet! Yes, they get huge, and yes, they can eat fish that may wander into there grip, but for the most part, the fish in my tank respect it and keep their distance and he keeps his.

They are beautiful creatures!
