Carpet attached to a Rock

haddon's carpets will often attach to rock or the glass when first introduced, especially if they are on the small side. It is not unusual to see them attached to the glass at the LFS.

Also he is really small in the day time about 4" across but at night he almost doubles in size and his tenticals get really long about 1" and get blown around alot either by the flow or he is diong it. Also I have offered him a piece of shrimp about 2/3 the size of the width of his mouth. The first one he pushed away and put underneith him and then when I got home tonighyt and he was bigger I tried again and I can't be for sure but I think he took that one, I figured he was hungry as his mouth was open about 1/4 inch and he was expanded I figured he was hunting. Is that about right? I m really new at this anemony thing and don't want to kill him.

Here is my light setup and pump pramaters I have three 250 watt 10K XM MH bulbs in Luminark A3 mini reflectors aprox 8" off the water surface I also have 3 96 watt power compak atinic lights aprox 11" off the water surface and at night I have 10 moon lights from the lebos mounted on a strip at a 45 degree andel to the water about 6" off the surface. All inclosed in a canopy painted white on the inside Oh I also have 4 Ice Cap fans to keep it cool.

Pumps I have a mag 18 for my return with 6 return pipes and I have 2 seio 1500 one open about 3/4 of the way and the other opened about 1/2 way I also have a reio 600 in the right corner and a reio 1200 maxi jet pointed down the front of my tank. My skimmer is a modified recirc ASM G3 thats reaction chamber has been shortened 2" so it woul fit under my standerd stand. Oh by the way my tank is 180 Gallons and my sump is a #40 breeder. thanks again for your help regards Wes

your new gallery pics look like you may have a S. gigantea, a closeup shot would confirm it. These do attach to rock, and are considered to be difficult to keep. The opened mouth is a sign of stress, not hunger (not unusual in a recently shipped animal). These guys need tons of fluctuating water movement and high light levels for the best chance of success. You may want to adjust the positions of your powerheads/water returns to maximize random flow over the area your anemone is sitting. Also, these anemones are fish eaters- silversides or chopped up larger whole fish might be a better food than shrimp.

He has blue spots on the top part of his base looks like a Mertens' sea anemone but can't be sure. I'll try and get a better picture have to get bateries for my camera.LOL

You got a S. gigantea, not a S. haddoni. Gigantea is one of the hardest to keep of the host anemones. They often stay on the rock or rock/sand interface. They need bright light and very good water flow. It is also very difficult to get a healthy Gigantea from LFS. I would not try to feed him until he stay attached and fully inflated all the time. Try small bits of food like Mysis shrimp or pulverized shrimp (easier for them to digest I think)
Good luck with him.

I believe your right Stichodactyla gigantea? According to the internet.
Non-adhesive verrucae on upper column blue to maroon, contrasting with yellowish, pinkish, tan, greenish-blue, or gray-green column. Are these really hard to keep and has anyone been able to do so? What is the best thing to feed him? And what are the warning signs that something is going bad? PLMK Thanks in advance for your help.

Unfourtunatly the Carpet has died reason for death is un known but I believe it was due to stress he underwent durring shipping and never fully recovered from. Thanks for the help and feed bach though. Regards Wes

i walked into my lfs the other day and saw a 12" blueish green carpet.
asked the guy how much he said 50 but i couldnt see the mouth all to well. also didnt know it was over 12" either until i got it home but im thinking it may be a starved gigantea i was looking for a haddoni but i got this guy on a rock/sand interface and the flow is sick in the area he settled and he seems to be looking a little better but im not sure if its going to make it the first day it completely inverted its stomach and was all shriveled up now its a little better but not tight on the mouth and the guts are still showing some after 2 days. one of my occ's started hosting it a small guy and it seems to really have perked up the anemone.
its starting to close the mouth a little more but im not sure. as it starts to get a little better ill try for a definate shot of the underside i thought i saw some verruace but it could just be wishful thinking.

either way i think its a haddoni and i hope it pulls thru.

sorry for the rant. its early and im at work.

sorry for the loss also sometimes things just dont work out.
