Catching my Damsels!

Here's another way. Get a flashlight and put some kind of red filter on there. If you know where they sleep turn off all the lights in the room and start removing the rocks and net them using the red light to see.

I've got the same challenge approching. Sounds like this is gonna be fun!!!!

But I just thought of something..... My nephew is 15 and has always wanted to go fishing in my quariums. I just may get out of having to do it at all.

but i probably just rearange my tank :(

Hobby Experience: "1.5 weeks! still cycling!"
Current Tanks: 55g FOWLR...i think.

Then please educate me, oh wise sage.

I'm not so sure I'm still cycling. I've been at 0/0/0 for a long time. I am a youth pastor and am gone for long periods of time during the summer, so I'm not wanting to drop some expensive fish/inverts in there and then leave. That make sense to you? So I put some damsels in there to live a charmed fishy little life for a couple months, to keep everything going, pooping, growing, etc., until I pull them out in August and start my reef tank with the more prized fish.

So please, oh reefnetworth, drop some wisdom on me.

also! :eek2: after 13 post he mentioned that he didnt cycle with them. which leads me to believe something doesnt sound correct in his statement. sorry if i offended everyone! :(
please, accept my apology.

How long are you typically gone for? I'm in the midst of trying to train my dog sitter to tend the tanks when I'm gone.

youre gone for long periods of time during the summer, so you dont wanna drop in something expensive and then leave? Damnsels are ok or are you just gonna let the tank run empty (nothing alive but bacteria) yet they are gonna live a charmed little life for a couple of months?
that doesnt make scence either...
there is still some things missing in the story...
and thanx for the sarcasm oh preacherman!!!

Could we keep this civil please? This is a great site but sometimes the bickering gets tiresome.

i agree Grins. but if the story is presented and changed , what is one expected to believe?
also agree with being civil, that was unappropriate and childish of me to say: "oh preacherman".
sorry again if i offended :(

also apologize for my sniping. I was reacting to what I felt was a backhanded remark. My bad.

But again in your last post you said "the story is presented and changed, wha tis one expected to believe?" What changed? That's irksome.

I began the tank a couple months ago. Put the damsels in to sustain the status quo of bacteria. Feeling like a broken record now.

I'm home/gone/home/gone so I put an automatic feeder in there for the guys so they have regular feedings. One book I read said not to rely on non-fish people for feedings.

Grins: depends a lot on how complicated your feeding schedule is. If it's just pellet food like mine, you could probably do a automatic feeder. If it is more complicated, maybe you have a reefing buddy who can help out? I dunno.

This thread has grown old. If anyone has any other ideas on catching the damsels, please post.

If anyone has any funny stories of attempting to catch a fish, please share it as well.

Thank you all for the help you've given, I feel better equipped to try to catch the little buggers.

see! now youve updated your Hobby Experience: and Current Tanks...
another change in the post!

i agree, catch the Damnsels. wheather its in a fish trap or not, good luck. although i feel its the most humane and easiest way, not to mention less frustrating, less time involved, and theyre cheap!
JDM :smokin: :p

EDIT: almost forgot, less stress on the fish itself. :)

Perhaps he hadn't updated his hobby experience before and after this realized he should?

As for how to catch them there has been some good advice already.

Turn all the pumps off and wait a few secs.

Then, apply bloodworm, and have a big net underneath.

When they start to eat, scoop away.

:)
