caulerpa

Here is what I am doing. I have a 120 gallon FOWLR tank, and I am slowly changing things to prepare to have a reef. I built a new filter with refugium, put live rock in it with caulerpa, and the caulerpa is all dieing off. I have a strong grow light on it from a hardware store. Is this the reason for the die off? I leave the lights on during night, off during day. I still have high nitrates in my system, will that kill it off? I have high nitrates because I had a sump with bioballs in it and I have been slowly removing bioballs in my new filter and replacing them with live rock. Thanks for the help!

Christa,

What kind of caulerpa is it? What kind of light are you using? What kind of water flow is it getting? Did it die all of a sudden or does it "waste away?"

I am not sure the type it is, I will have to look it up. It has long shoots that grow up and also across the substrate. It gets slow waterflow across, although I have a small pump to skim the top so it won't go stagnant. My Ca level is a little high right now but not bad. The light I am using on it is a clamp light with a blue grow light on it from Menards. Maybe this isn't sufficient. It has kind of wasted away slowly, although there is some that is still alive. It looks like it has brown stringy stuff on it, I was thinking maybe it was detritous but not sure.
