CC in FW?

Ok so its not a SwW tank question pr say, but I have 50 lbs of CC that I have nothing to do with, and I was wondering if I could use it in FW tanks??? I have 3 F tanks that I think the CC would look awesome in, but I dont want to harm my fish in the process.

I think I heard somewhere that it is not good for freshwater. I would not use it.

Someone else with more knowledge may have more precise information.

I think it will cause your FW pH to be too high.

I would not recommend keeping Discus with CC. I think any fish from the brackish water can do well in CC (due to high GH).

CC is best used with African Cichlids. They require and can tolerate a pH of 8.1-8.4

These are about the only things that i would recommend keeping with CC

some africans even require a ph of 9. I used lots of crushed coral in my filters of my old african 180, along with lots of limestone in the tank

CC is made of calcium carbonate (same as aragonite sand, shells and coral skeletons are made of)... none of this is recommended in any FW tank other than brackish or African, as above. People who have shells & coral in an non-high pH tank (such as goldfish, as often seen) will note that their shells slowly dissolve and leach into the water.

yup. I saw an instance of this where the guy called me complaining about his fish dying constantly ... needless to say he had tonnes of dead corals in this large tank of discus because they "looked cool" to him.

Exactly what I was going to say.

IME; CC will cause algae issues AC tanks. If you are going to use CC, mix it 50/50 with sand to reduce the carpet algae affect.

ok nm then , this was only going to be for a beta cube and my gouramis tank.

What about using it in my refugium? or would that be the same as why I am switching in the fish place?
