CDMAS Newsletter

I'm out of this process. I'm done with any newsletter.

We already have Reef Central in which anyone can post anything. Nothing is stopping Steve from writing about the meetings or Matt about the Council or Michael about whatever he wants to write about or Joe or Vin, etc.

We don't need an online newsletter if we already have our Reef Central forum. Or, if that's not good enough, use our website. But in either case I have no value to add to either option.

I find myself repeatedly discouraged by the leadership of this club. Each continues to preach that this is a small, close-knit group just looking to have fun, but none seems to be able to let go of any control.

One more thing ...

The back page will be totally dedicated to advertising.

I think advertisements are premature, if we're even interested in going that route, and that we need to come up with the vendor policy we've been discussing before we get into anything like this. In addition, I have a feeling most of the club would rather that the last page be a continuation of content rather than advertisements.

I may be the one cook too many that you mention, but I feel I am representing the majority here. Anyone who disagrees with me, speak up!

I will refrain from making this into a ****ing match, but I disagree that the council is witholding from you any control that you deserve to have and until I hear anyone other than you say otherwise, I will continue to believe that. Although I've disagreed with you on many points, I really think I gave you more than due consideration on all of them.

I still think the newsletter is a fun idea, and if Chris still wishes to retract his offer, I will consider taking the responsibility of putting it together.

I personaally feel that the Back Page Ad idea adds another "commercial aspect" to out club that I for one don't think we need. I do think that we as a club can have fun with an online newletter. So we should proceed with the idea as far as im concerned.

I also agree with Joe and Vin,

if you look at the number of people who put in their ideas, it is but a VERY small fraction of the club. We could consider discussing this at the meeting this Saturday?
Also, I strongly prefer electronic articles written by our own - and strongly agree that I could learn tons from MichaelG and others - which then could be archived at the web site produced by Joe. It is not like RC, it is our own! Something to be proud of!

 I work at the TU so im all about advertising......I don't see a problem with ads in our newsletter. It could be just a back page ad and rotate it....among our sponsors. A little added incentive.

no need to quote me....in hind site I think it's not a great idea. And I think I am intitled to change my mind.

The Newsletter is not a dead issue and as I said in PM to you Chris "we can discusss it at the next meeting." We should gage our decisions on the CDMAS membership....not on a few ppl that happen to post there feelings in this thread.

Look, the major problem with this newsletter is going to be a dearth or articles. If you really feel that it should be under 200 words, break the longer article up into installments.

Ultimately, I think limiting it to really short articles is going to constrain the value of the document. But if you feel its easier to get it going that way, I have no problem with it. If a member wants to run with a project I think it should be encouraged. Just be prepared to accept some meddling! :D

In the long run, a more flexible format would probably be best for exactly the above reason. It seems like allowing people to download a pdf off the website would be perfect.

My two cents on this. Chris, if he's willing to keep an open mind, would be our CDMAS newsletter editor. He would collect contributing articles from our gifted & enthusiastic members of our club. There should be no restriction in size of the articles from our volunteers kind enough to share their time & talent. IMHO: Every single one of us has something to contribute if just a paragraph, a picture or an entire chapter/collection relating to hobby experience.

In this day an age of computers and internet it would be a great waste to our natural resources and club fund to publish on paper when it's so much easier and prettier with high resolution colored PDFs.

We certainly don't want to assocate our beloved hobby with business advertisements as much possible. I see an occasional exception here under unique circumstances to be justified later. But I am hoping this will be much later if ever.

Yes Chris, even on PDF publishing your tireless editor work with information organizing & distribution is an important & valuable asset to our club. It would be a chance to not only loosen your own creativity but for all of us.

Either way I am not going to lose any sleep over this. After all this is just a hobby. But a hobby which can unleash untold wealth of information and education if we work together.

OMG....Its just a newsletter! :D

Regardless of whats been said, what is important, I think, is to just get one going.

I'd say.....

Print version: NO
Online version: YES
Advertisements: NO (for now)
Distribution: Download off CDMAS website
Size limitations: NONE (if someone wants to write, let em; come on, how many pages can this thing be? Even so, if I don't want to read it, then who cares.)

I do feel there needs to be some type of control over what is included...for example, if something is "published" concerning a LFS and they take offense to it (if they get their hands on a copy of it), who's liable? (actually, I know the answer, but some of you had to think about it, didn't you?). Thats just one example that comes to mind. So rule #1: No bashing local vendors (for whatever reason). I'm sure we can come up with a set of "obvious" rules to follow.

Besides.....its a NEWS letter, guys....lets hear what's new in the club....How about - "TA's Cleaner Shrimp Molts" see article on page 2 (NOT :D ) ......or......"Jaze's New In-Wall Tank".....perfect example of something worthy of mentioning (pics included) .

This shouldn't be as difficult as I've been reading.

how about "members how and why they got into the hobby"? 50 members....lots-o content for future publications there alone.

or

"joe Convinces wife to let him upgrade the size of his tank" ...and I didn't have to get her drunk

Yes, it's just a newsletter and my intentions were to keep it as just that. ;)

We can make it easier than that by just having the council review the newsletter before it is published. That may be an unpopular option to those who think the council is on a power trip , but it is easier than coming up with more rules. Like you said Tony, this is just a newsletter! And besides, I'm getting sick of discussing rules and everyone else probably is as well.

No kidding!

I agree, it’s only a newsletter. How about you all let me do my thing and hold your complaints/suggestions/meddling until after you have the first edition in your hands (or on your screen).

Please keep in mind that while nearly 100% agree that online is the way to go, all of those responding are doing so while online. We may be ignoring a sizable portion of the membership.

I doubt that very much.
Most members found the club through RC and/or have access to a computer. And Acrobat Reader is free for download.

It's not just your thing.....it's a CDMAS thing...like it or not you can't just do what YOU want. As I have said WE will discuss it at the next meeting with the attending members.
