How critical is the center brace on a 55G? Mine is melted from lights, it's not broken through but makes me nervous. Could I super glue it or should I get a new tank?
Granted this was about 8 years ago, but the center brace on my 55 did the same thing. It did eventfully snap, the tank bowed out about 5 inches. I didn't wait under to see how long it would last. I drained half the tank and went and bought a 75g.
I am not sure if super glue would hold it or not, but I wouldn't trust it. You could try one of those expandable clamps.
I've seen people mend the center brace of tanks with acrylic and acrylic screws-
I can't search for it right now but I'll try to search again later (I think it was in the DIY forum?)
Here is what a friend in our club did when he melted his. Sorry but the pictures seem to be gone but I am sure if you pm him he will e-mail them or take new ones and send to you. He is a really good guy. He's really busy but will respond as soon as he can.
when i bought my 150g the center brace was cracked in half........all you got to do is take the old one off and order another one from one of ur lfs.....i ordered the whole brace for 20 bucks i think
i used to have a 55 gal Fw tank that the center brace was broke on. It bowed alot and i had it that way for about 5 months, then i got a whole new trim thing for the top of the tank and sealed it on there since the brace was part of the trim. Was perfictly fine after than, i think i payed like $35 for it probally 8 years ago.
