Centropyge nigriocella

Wow, I've never seen anything like it. The black patch at the base of the pectoral fin is really neat. Its swimming seems a bit "off" to me though...

I absolutely love this fish. I know they are rare (in the aquarium trade) but I cant believe the price. They are a widespread species, just super cryptic. If only some collectors would just focus on this species........... (I guess its not as desirable to some since the subdued coloration)

Hey Luiz, are you sure that fish was collected in Fiji? I heard from a collector in Vanuatu and have pics of a specimen collected... the first possibly since the eighties! Has to be the same specimen... I'm going to do a write up on it... an amazing story!

Michael, trust me... it's not a matter of collectors not targeting this species... they are NEVER seen... just INSANELY cryptic... never even heard of a wild photo of one...

Yeah John, Vanuatu is what I meant ;) It is the same one. From what I heard it was accidentally collected in a barrier net while they were trying to get a C. loriculus. And yes, I have almost 1,000 dives logged inside this species range and never saw one. They are *very* secretive. Makes you wonder what else you will get when people start doing more rotenone stations...

Leave the rotenone to you scientists Luiz! :)

This guy stays as nigriocellus does it not, as the "back spot" is a noun no? Or is it "black spotted"? Not being nitpicky... a serious question now that we worked loriculus out. :)

What a friggin' fish though... collected between 10 and 15 meters!!!

I'm not sure why anyone would value a suddued color Angel like the Black Spot, to such extremes. It will probably just vanish in the person-who-bought-it's LR and never be seen again!
I'm a big an Angelfish geek as the rest of you, but this just feels off kilter. Or are Japanese aquarist's even more fanatic than us here in the 'States?

If I had the available funds and was in the position to acquire such fish, I would.
The glimpses you'd get occasionally would be so sweet!!!

Good question John, the original description says: "Named nigriocellus in reference to the two black ocellate spots", so I am not completely sure. Based on that I would go with "Centropyge with black spots", in which case nigriocellus is the correct gender to use, but both Jack Randall and Rich Pyle spell it as nigriocella. I will ask what they think.

Hey guys this fish is going into my 300g SPS peninsula. I'll update with photos when it comes out of the rockwork.

And to add to that, Grant said they regularly collect in the exact spot it was found and have never seen one before.

I have a feeling whoever buys this fish will not see it much!
